Tokachi Japanese Restaurant - Hidden Gem!!

On the days that we stay home, we either go for Japanese food or Taiwanese food (as in Pearl Castle/Bubble Word/etc)! And yes, we even eat out on the days we stay at home LOL...we're just that lazy! ;)

Our fridge is empty 90% of the time and the only "food" we keep around the house is an excessive amount of juice boxes (yes I still drink juice boxes), iced tea, coconut water, dumplings (for quick dinners), and a bunch of random asian snacks LOL (like mochi, pineapple cakes, durian ice-cream, seaweed etc.) - Cause we're healthy like that ;)

So when we do stay at home we usually go to my dad's favourite japanese restaurant, Tengoku in Guildford!! Tengoku is the only Japanese place we frequent, we go at least once a week. The food isn't anything special, but my dad likes their large portioned bento boxes and their high ceilings LOL

And after eating at Tengoku or whatever restaurant we're at that day we go to T&T and Maxim's to stock up on snacks for the week before heading home hehe.

My dad wanted to go somewhere else for lunch today (to my relief) so we went Tokachi!! Man, I love it when I find hidden gems like this!! Of all places, who would expect to find such an awesome Japanese place in Whalley?! This place seriously deserves more credit!

Tokachi is Japanese owned and operated, and they've been in business since 1995 (the year I was born haha!) The inside is really nice, they have 8 tatami rooms spanning the entire restaurant and they let us sit in one even though there was only the two of us! Tokachi is just steps away from the Gateway sky train station, super convenient for transit users and SFU surrey students!!

I wanted to order one of their teishoku sets (bottom right hand corner) but my dad didn't let me LOL... he was like "That's so little food!!"

Their nigiri/sashimi is on the pricier side, but from what I've heard, it's supposedly super fresh! :D

Korokke (Potato Croquette) Chicken Kaarage, and Gomae Lunch Box!! $10.95

Korokke: 4/5 stars
Gomae: 4/5 stars
Chicken Kaarage: 3/5 stars

I got one of their mix and max lunch boxes!! I chose the korrokke and chicken karaage as my main fillers!! It also came with a bowl of rice and some miso soup!

4.5/5 stars
Probably one of my favourite korrokes I've had to date!! The outside was SUPER flaky and moist, the inside tasted like curry, the potato filling was fragrant, flavourful, and melted in my mouth! The ponzu sauce it came with wasn't your ordinary ponzu had an incredible amount of depth and flavour!!

The Chicken karaage was actually a chicken wing, but it was also really good! The outside was crispy and well seasoned, and the inside was moist and juicy!! :D

4.5/5 stars

Mijune (followmefoodie) gave their gomae a 5.5/6 stars, and I have to agree with was awesome!! This is not your average gomae!! It wasn't overdressed with sauce and they use fresh sesame seeds which imparts a lovely roasted flavour!  :D

Today's Special $12.95
Sashimi, Half a California Roll, Tempura, & Gyoza

Sashimi: 4.5/5 stars
Cali Roll: 4/5 stars
Tempura: 1.5/5 stars
Gyoza: 1.5/5 stars

My dad defaulted to his usual: the sashimi bento box!! The sashimi and california roll were exceptionally solid!! The tempura was rather disappointing though, The batter was laid on too thick and a tad bit soggy. The gyozas were alright, a little hard around the edges but the filling was juicy!

Cali Roll
  4/5 stars

I had a piece of dad's california roll, and again, this was a solid version!! The imitation crab meat they use is the higher quality kind, and the meat itself wasn't overdressed with mayo! The avocado was nice and fresh too and there was a generous amount of sesame seeds!

4.5/5 stars
Mijune gave their sashimi a perfect 6/6, and again, she was right!! This was solid!! You can tell how fresh it is just by looking at it! Sure, the pieces were pretty small, but it's definitely quality over quantity here!!

Miso Soup
4/5 stars
My dad's reaction to the miso soup: "Now this is what miso soup is supposed to taste like!!" I have to admit, I agree with him LOL. I'm not a huge fan of miso soup, but this one definitely stands out. It's not overly salty and the miso tastes like real miso, and doesn't taste watered down at all! The temperature it was served at was just right, not too hot but not lukewarm either! :D

This was just before we left - just after the lunch time rush!! When we arrived the place was packed! :D

Yayy for tatami rooms! :D
