Wang's Shanghai Cuisine

'bout time I had some legit Shanghainese food! Okay, okay, I went to Dinesty (not too long ago) but as much as I love Dinesty...Dinesty isn't a good representation of what legitimate Shanghainese food should taste like (Dinesty is more of a mishmash of different regional cuisines: Taiwanese, Shanghainese, Sichuan, Cantonese...but then again, so are most Chinese restaurants in Vancouver harhar.)

We were originally planning on going to Congee Noodle King that day, but when we arrived, there was a lineup going out the door (and our starving selves didn't want to wait in line.) Since we were in the area, we decided to go to Wang's instead (I've wanted to try them out ever since I read Dennis' review!)
Wang's is the reincarnation of the famous food court stall (by the same name) in Crystal Mall! It was absolutely packed when we went during lunch! They should really considering expanding (the restaurant itself is tiny.) The seating is a bit uncomfortable because the tables are spaced so close together...but that didn't deter us from having a lovely meal! :D

Like always...I ordered way too much rice (much to the shock of the waitress.) I won't get into that time I ate 10 bowls of rice at Lucky Noodle House...but that's another blog post ;)

Pan Fried Rice Cake with Salted Vegetable and Shredded Pork
3.5/5 stars

A must order for me whenever I go to a Shanghainese place!! XLB alone isn't going to fill me up! ;) This was a pretty decent version!! It wasn't as salty as Dinesty's, which I appreciated. The rice cakes were glutinous and chewy! The salted vegetables added a ton of flavour!

Wontons in Chilli Oil (10 pieces)
4.5/5 stars

OMG, wontons in chilli oil is legitimately my FAVOURITE dish everrr, I don't know why I don't order it more often! This over XLB any day! hehe. The chilli oil is the best part. After I was done the wontons I ordered a bowl of plain rice, just so I could eat it with the chilli oil! :D

The chilli oil is super fragrant and nutty tasting (from the sesame oil.) The wontons were juicy and very porky. I've tried this exact dish at Din Tai Fung and it was even better!

Pork XLB
4/5 stars

This is what they're famous for! Wang's definitely makes some of the best XLB in Vancouver. This can't compare to Din Tai Fung, but they're still delicious nonetheless!  The skin is relatively thin, and the interior is super flavourful and juicy! I didn't even dip it in the sauce!

Spring Rolls
4/5 stars

I don't order spring rolls that often, but I was craving something fried that day! To my surprise, these were delightful!! Crunchy on the outside, and flavourful on the inside, and not oily in the least!

After I was done my first bowl of rice I ordered a second bowl...and the waitress was like "You want another bowl of rice?!"

  1. 10 bowls of rice... I died a little on the inside when I read that...

I never dip my XLB in the sauce that it comes with. I am always paranoid of breaking the bun if I wave it around too much. To this day, I still have no clue what the sauce tastes like! XD

    1. hahaha how many bowls of rice can you eat?! ;)

      LMAOO paranoid much? jokesjokes XD
The sauce tastes like a mixture of soy sauce and vinegar, you should try it next time haha!!

    2. Umm... I can eat like 2 bowls of rice and that's it LOL

I will try it next time, though I'm not the biggest fan of vinegar. =)
